    Job Description:
    This position focuses on the audio production and creative aspects of the Music Industry program. Primary responsibilities include teaching foundations of audio.

    • A typical faculty workload responsibility may include up to twenty four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.
    • The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas as assigned and qualified.
    • May be expected to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or at the university's additional locations, as assigned.
    • The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct research productively and mentor students in research, help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion, and may be expected to develop external grant funding opportunities.
    • All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, in contributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (See Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement).
    • This position will advise undergraduate majors.
    • The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in Music industry.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Masters degree (conferred on an official transcript by August 14, 2024).
    • Four (4) years of documented professional experience in commercial audio production settings within the music industry.
    • Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse population and apply an equity lens to this position including social justice and/or anti-racism.

    The Popular Music concentration in the Bachelor of Arts in Music welcomes and accommodates 21st  century musicians interested in popular music and music industry studies and entrepreneurship. We  welcome singers and songwriters, laptop performers or composers, DJs, producers, guitarists, bassists,  keyboardists, MCs, and other instrumentalists and vocalists whose musical practices and playing styles 

    are representative of varied popular music idioms, as well as music production, audio recording, and  music industry specialists. All students gain a working knowledge of the music industry, music business  and the entrepreneurial skills necessary to gain meaningful employment upon graduation. Students  participate in individual applied study in a chosen specialization and a variety of group performance and  production opportunities. Internships associated with specialization courses provide opportunities for  students to apply their learning in a real-life context. A capstone course allows students to further  develop original work in their chosen area of emphasis.  

      

    We seek an innovative and creative performing artist who will participate in and further our effort to  reimagine what arts education means in the 21st century. The Clinical Assistant/Clinical Associate  Professor of Popular Music Voice will teach applied voice lessons and popular music ensembles as well  as courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise within the industry. Special consideration will be given to  those with experience teaching courses related to songwriting. The candidate is expected to  demonstrate excellence in teaching with the ability to instruct at the undergraduate level, both in person and online, and to recruit students regionally, nationally and internationally. The candidate may  maintain a portfolio of creative activity (i.e. performance) and/or research commensurate with a clinical track position and will be expected to mentor students, participate in recruitment activities and work  effectively with faculty colleagues and administration in service to advance the mission of the ASU  School of Music, Dance and Theatre and the popular music program. We are especially interested in  applicants who are dedicated to advancing the ASU Charter and realizing ASU’s Design Aspirations.  

    Required Qualifications: 

    ● Master’s degree in music or a related field, or equivalent experience in popular music singing  that includes professional performance. A graduate degree is required for international  candidates. 

    ● Industry credits with demonstrated national experience and success as a singer.  ● Demonstrated excellence in teaching and/or mentorship in relation to applied vocal instruction. ● Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

    Desired Qualifications: 

    Candidates should provide evidence of demonstrated ability in one or more of these areas: ● Demonstrated excellence in teaching voice at the college level.  

    ● Demonstrated excellence in the craft of songwriting as demonstrated through published  commercial recordings, in both individual and collaborative settings.  

    ● Evidence of having worked in or held leadership positions in the music industry, in ensemble  and/or in band settings.  

    ● Evidence of multidisciplinary performances and creative programming.  

    ● Ability to design and implement curriculum and programs, including online, in-person and  hybrid courses including topics in vocal pedagogy, singing and songwriting.  

    ● The ability to advance innovative teaching practices and envision new paradigms of arts  education. 

    ● The ability to work and collaborate across the arts and design disciplines of the Herberger  Institute and with people outside the arts, across the ASU campuses, and in the community. ● The ability to attract students, partnerships, resources, donors, grants or other sources of  support to advance the mission of the popular music program; the School of Music, Dance and  Theatre and the Herberger Institute.

    The successful candidate's primary responsibilities will include teaching selected courses from the electronic music production track at the undergraduate and graduate levels. These courses teach in-depth theory and applications of technologies such as sound synthesis, MIDI, and digital audio. Courses are taught in the department’s computer labs equipped with Mac computers, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and multiple hardware and software MIDI instruments.     Qualifications

    Preferred qualification is an earned master’s degree in music technology or related field. Significant professional experience in the field of recording engineering or music production including recognition as an industry professional of national prominence may be considered in lieu of master’s degree. Candidates should possess expertise in audio recording techniques, editing, mixing, post-production and audio mastering. Avid instructor certification needed upon hire. Additional expertise in audio signal flow, microphone technologies and applications, studio acoustics, studio and live sound consoles (both analog and digital), professional session protocols, hardware and software electronic instruments, and hardware and software mix tools and applications desired; current credits as a professional mix engineer in a variety of styles and a commitment to applying this breadth in the classroom; evidence of successful teaching; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and a commitment to the university’s Christian mission.

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities include overseeing recording arts and live sound production courses; teaching classes in the Commercial Music curriculum as well as the Division of Music’s Introduction to Music Technology course; supervising student capstone projects; managing the newly built recording studio; mentoring and advising Commercial Music students; and actively recruiting prospective students.

    Position may include additional teaching assignments based on candidate strengths and school needs, including, but not limited to, ensemble coaching; applied performance instruction; and other responsibilities related to commercial music and the creative arts. The successful candidate will participate fully in departmental and university service and maintain an active profile as an audio engineer and industry professional of national prominence. A commitment to academic excellence and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners is expected.
