Daily Noise-Exposure of Audio Engineers: Assessment of Daily Noise-Exposures of Professional Music-Recording Audio Engineers Employing OSHA PEL Criteria

Wesley A. Bulla

Abstract

Previous studies of noise-exposure and hearing loss have focused almost entirely on musicians or their audiences. We documented daily peak, maximum, and mean sound pressure levels and calculated exposure levels via criteria established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Results suggest that while recording engineers generally do not exceed OSHA criteria for daily noise exposure in the workplace and may not be in immediate risk for development of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), they may be at risk of hearing loss due to long-term exposure throughout their career. Previous studies as well as current noise-exposure assessment criteria and long-term hearing conservation practices are discussed.
